What is a domain name?

A domain name is essentially a signpost on the Internet.  Almost every web site you've ever been to, and every email you've ever composed, has used a domain name in its address.

People register domain names in order to 'stake a claim' to a particular name - whether for business or personal reasons. Once you register a domain name, it is entirely yours, no other party may use that identity online as long as you continue to pay the yearly renewal fee and abide by the terms of use.

The domain name is found to the right of the “@” sign in an email address, for example info@domainname.co.uk or in a web address it is after the www, for example.

What do the different domain name endings mean?
 

All domain names have an ending, the most popular ones being .com, .org and .net.

Each ending is set to help the person browsing the Internet to identify what type of site they are visiting, although this can only be used as a guide as anyone can use any of the endings they like.

How do I buy a domain name?

Choose a name

Try to think of a name that is easy to remember and, if possible, one that briefly describes or sums up your web site. Try to keep it short, as short names are easier to remember. For example, if you own a ladies shoe shop, your web site could be www.highheels.com.
 

Check availability

Many of the popular domains may already be registered, so be prepared to try and change your chosen name, or consider an alternative domain ending. e.g. .eu, .biz, .co.uk etc.

Register

If your chosen domain is available; we will take some details from you and register your domain on your behalf.  It's worth noting that your new domain may take up to 48 hours to be available on the web.
